The Executive Secretary of the Mining Commission, Engineer Ramadhani Lwamo, has called on Commission employees to adopt a culture of regular physical exercise as a key measure to prevent chronic diseases and the spread of HIV/AIDS in the workplace.
Engineer Lwamo made the remarks while opening a two-day peer educator training organized by the Mining Commission in Dodoma, aimed at raising awareness among staff on HIV, AIDS, and non-communicable diseases (NCDs).
He emphasized that good physical and mental health is essential for productivity and effective performance, noting that many health challenges today stem from unhealthy lifestyles, poor eating habits, lack of exercise, and risky sexual behaviors.
“A healthy body and mind are the foundation of effective performance. Each of us has a responsibility to protect ourselves and lead a healthy lifestyle,” said Engineer Lwamo.
He further underscored the importance of integrating workplace health strategies into annual institutional plans and building the capacity of staff to manage health-related challenges within their work environments.
According to Engineer Lwamo, the Mining Commission continues to set an example by promoting physical fitness through sports bonanzas and ensuring that employees living with chronic illnesses receive proper nutrition and medical support.
Addressing the issue of confidentiality, he urged staff to respect the privacy of patients and ensure that any health information is disclosed only with the individual’s consent to prevent the spread of misinformation.
“It is important that those affected voluntarily disclose their health status so they can be properly supported. We must approach such matters with compassion and understanding,” he added.
Speaking on behalf of the participants, Mining Technician from the Kahama Resident Mines Office, Jackson Mumanyi, commended the Commission for organizing the training, saying it would enhance awareness and positively change attitudes among employees towards health and preventive care.
The two-day training, taking place at the Mining Commission offices in Dodoma, aims to equip peer educators with the knowledge and skills to promote workplace health awareness and encourage regular exercise among all Commission staff.
