The Tanga Regional Commissioner, Chiku Gallawa has pounded
on the corrupt police traffic personnel
saying that they are to be held responsible for many road accidents occurring in the region.
Gallawa who was officiating the start of the Road Safety
Week 2013 in the region performed at the Tangamano playgrounds, yesterday
directed the Regional Police Commander, Constantine Massawe to squeeze such
culprits by taking stern actions against them once they are spotted.
“These corrupt minded police traffic
must be shown the way out of the force as soon as possible before the region continues
to suffer heavily on road carnage.” said the RC, adding that though they are
small in number, they will tarnish the good name of your institution.
She said there are a few police traffic personel who do not
execute their duties as laid down according to the traffic regulations and
rules, but instead use their positions in taking bribes from uncommitted drivers.
She said the trend
has driven some untrusted drivers to use money in bribing the corrupted police
traffic to entertain their selfish ends.
The Regional Commissioner was reacting to a road accident
report which was read to her by the Tanga Regional Traffic Officer (RTO), Abdi
Isango who said 78 people lost their lives in accidents during January and
August of this year compared to last year where 68 lost lives.
He noted that a total
of 91 people were injured during the eight month period of January, 2013
compared with the same period of last year when 99 people got injured.
Isango attributed the
cause of accidents to careless driving, bad roads and widespread vandalism in
road signs.
